If some rooms in your home feel tropical while others are stubbornly chilly, your radiators may not be sharing heat fairly. Balancing your radiators helps your heating system send hot water evenly around the house, so every room can reach a comfortable temperature.
What radiator balancing actually means
Radiator balancing is the process of adjusting how much hot water flows through each radiator. The aim is to make sure every radiator heats up at a similar rate and reaches a similar temperature.
It does not change how hot the boiler runs, but it controls where the heat goes first. Without balancing, the radiators closest to the boiler often get most of the heat, while those further away struggle.
Signs your radiators need balancing
You do not need specialist tools to spot an unbalanced system. Everyday comfort issues are often the first clue that flow is not equal across your radiators.

The whole house takes a long time to reach a comfortable temperature
If your radiators have already been bled and they are still uneven, balancing is usually the next step to try.
Tools you will need for radiator balancing
You can often balance radiators yourself with a few simple tools. Before you start, gather everything you need so you are not hunting in a drawer halfway through.
For most homes, you will need:
Radiator key for bleeding radiators if needed
Adjustable spanner or small lockshield valve key
Thermometer, ideally an infrared thermometer for surface readings
Old towel or cloth to catch drips around valves
If you have a notebook, it can also help to jot down which radiator is where and how it behaves as you go.
Getting ready to balance your radiators
Before making any adjustments, it is important to set a safe, controlled starting point. That way you will know the changes you make are actually having an effect.
First, turn your heating off and let the system cool so the radiators are safe to touch. Then make sure all radiator valves are open, especially the thermostatic radiator valves, sometimes called TRVs, which usually have numbers or a frost symbol on them.
Turn the heating back on and set the room thermostat higher than usual so the system runs continuously for a while. Walk around the house and note which radiators heat up first and which are slowest. The fastest ones will usually need their flow restricted slightly during balancing.
Step-by-step guide to balancing radiators
1. Identify the lockshield valves
Each radiator typically has two valves. The TRV or standard on/off valve is the one you adjust for daily temperature control. The lockshield valve is the other one, often with a plastic cap that is not meant to be turned regularly.
The lockshield is the valve you adjust during balancing. It controls how much hot water can pass through that radiator and is usually set and then left alone.
2. Start with the closest radiator to the boiler
Switch the heating off again and allow things to cool slightly. Begin with the radiator that sits closest to the boiler on the pipework, which is often one of the fastest to heat up.
Remove the plastic cap on the lockshield valve, place your adjustable spanner or valve key on the valve stem and close it gently by turning clockwise until it stops. Do not force it.
3. Open the lockshield in small increments
Now reopen the lockshield valve slightly, turning it anti-clockwise in small movements, around a quarter turn at a time. Then turn the heating back on and let the system run.
Use your thermometer to measure the temperature of the pipe or radiator surface near the inlet and near the outlet. You are aiming for a consistent temperature drop across each radiator, rather than one exact number.
4. Work through the radiators in order
Move to the next closest radiator to the boiler, following the same process: close the lockshield gently, open it a small amount, and let the radiator warm while you monitor it.
Radiators nearer the boiler generally need their lockshields more closed, while those further away need them more open. Adjust in small steps, giving each radiator a few minutes to settle before making further tweaks.
5. Fine-tune and check comfort
Once you have adjusted all the radiators, walk around the house again. Check that they are heating more evenly and that no room is being left far behind.
You may need a second pass, making very small extra turns to get a more consistent feel. Aim for a comfortable overall balance rather than chasing perfection on a thermometer.
Troubleshooting common balancing problems
Balancing is usually straightforward, but a few common issues can make it harder. Knowing what to look out for can save you time and frustration.
It is easy to mix up the TRV with the lockshield. Remember, the numbered valve is for daily use and the plain, capped valve is for balancing. If you find yourself turning the TRV while balancing, reset it and switch back to the lockshield.
Avoid overtightening valves, as this can damage them. Valves should turn smoothly; if a valve feels seized or refuses to move, do not force it.
If a radiator is cold at the top even after balancing, there is likely air trapped inside and it needs bleeding with a radiator key. If it is cold at the bottom and hot at the top, that can point to sludge build-up inside, which balancing alone will not fix.
When to stop and call a professional
Balancing is well within the abilities of many homeowners, but some situations are best left to a qualified engineer. Safety and the long-term health of your system should always come first.
Stop and call a Gas Safe or experienced heating engineer if you notice any leaks around valves, find valves that are seized or crumbling, or still have stubborn cold spots after careful balancing and bleeding. These can indicate deeper system issues that need expert attention.
