Leaking Radiator Valve: What to Check and How to Fix It

A leaking radiator valve can quickly turn from a small drip into stained floors, swollen skirting boards and a cold room if the radiator has to be turned off. Understanding where the leak is coming from and what you can safely do next helps you act fast without making things worse.

First checks when you notice a leaking radiator valve

Start by working out if the leak is definitely from the valve, not from the radiator body or pipework nearby. Lay some kitchen roll or a light-coloured cloth beneath the valve so you can see fresh drips clearly.

Dry the valve and surrounding area with a towel, then watch for a minute or two. If the water appears around the valve rather than from the radiator panel or a joint further along the pipe, you are likely dealing with a valve leak.

  • Protect the flooring: Put a tray, towel or plastic sheet under the valve to catch drips.

  • Turn off the heating: Let the system cool so you are not working near hot water.

  • Keep electrics safe: Unplug nearby appliances and avoid standing water near sockets.

Common places a radiator valve can leak

Radiator valves have several parts that can seep or drip. Knowing the names helps you describe the issue and choose the right action.

Leak around the valve spindle or gland nut

The spindle is the small shaft that turns inside the valve when you adjust the temperature. Just below the handle or TRV head is a small nut known as the gland nut. If water appears here, the internal packing or seal may be worn.

Sometimes a gentle tighten of the gland nut stops a slow weep. Only use a small adjustable spanner and turn it just a fraction of a turn at a time. If the leak worsens or you feel the nut resisting, stop and call a professional.

Leak from the compression nut at the pipe connection

The compression nut is the larger nut where the valve joins the copper or plastic pipe. A drip from here often points to a slightly loose nut or a flattened olive (the small metal ring inside).

You can often “nip up” this nut: that means tightening it only a tiny amount, typically a quarter turn or less. Support the body of the valve with one spanner while you gently tighten the nut with another so you are not twisting the pipework. If it does not improve quickly, do not keep tightening, as you could crush the pipe or damage the joint.

Leak at the radiator tail connection

The radiator tail is the short threaded piece that screws into the radiator and connects to the valve. Leaks here usually appear at the joint where the tail meets the radiator or right at the union between the tail and the valve.

These leaks are often due to failed PTFE tape, a worn fibre washer, or corrosion inside the radiator. Temporary tightening rarely offers a long-term fix, and the radiator may need draining so the tail and washer can be renewed safely.

TRV head or lockshield cap issues

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) and lockshields sometimes appear to leak from the plastic cap or head. In many cases the water is actually coming from the spindle underneath and running up or along the body.

If a TRV head is cracked or loose, it can stress the spindle and seals. Avoid forcing stiff TRVs and keep heads firmly fitted but not overtightened. If water is collecting inside or around the head, the internal valve seals usually need attention or replacement.

Safe checklist before you tighten or isolate anything

Before you reach for the tools, take a moment to make sure you are not putting yourself or your system at risk. Radiator valves and older pipework, especially microbore systems, can be delicate.

  • Protect carpets, laminate and skirting with towels or a shallow tray.

  • Turn the heating off and allow the radiator to cool.

  • Locate the main stopcock so you know where to turn the water off in an emergency.

  • If water is spraying or near electrics, stop immediately and call a professional.

If the leak is slow, you can also isolate the individual radiator. Close the valve on the leaking side by turning it off fully, then close the lockshield valve on the other side (count the number of turns so it can be reset later). This can reduce water loss while you arrange a repair.

Checking for other damage around the valve

Once the area is dry and safe, look closely at the valve body, adjoining pipe and radiator surface. You are checking for problems that tightening alone will not solve.

Look for green or white crusty deposits, rust, or pitting on the metal. These are signs of pinhole corrosion or long-term weeping. Also check for hairline cracks in the valve body or around soldered joints, which indicate the valve or pipe section will need replacing.

If seals have failed, you may see staining or water tracks around joints even when the heating is off. On older valves the rubber or fibre parts can harden with age, so any small movement or temperature change can start a leak again even after a temporary fix.

Washer or packing tweak vs full valve replacement

Some small leaks can be improved by renewing packing or washers. For example, a slight drip from the spindle gland can sometimes be cured by adding a little PTFE string or gland packing under the gland nut, or replacing a simple washer if the valve design allows it.

These jobs usually require the system to be at least partially drained and are best handled by someone confident with heating systems. Never drain down a sealed or pressurised system unless you understand how to repressurise and vent it correctly afterwards.

In many cases, especially with very old valves, damaged TRVs, corroded bodies or delicate microbore pipework, a complete valve replacement is the safest and most reliable answer. This lets a plumber ensure the pipe connections are sound, the radiator tail and washers are renewed and the system is refilled with fresh inhibitor.

Preventing future radiator valve leaks

Once your leaking radiator valve has been repaired or replaced, a little routine care helps avoid a repeat. Gentle operation is key: do not force stiff TRVs or lockshields, and avoid using valves as handles to lean on when cleaning or decorating.

Keep your heating water in good condition. A heating professional can check inhibitor levels and top them up during your annual boiler service, which helps reduce internal corrosion of radiators and valves. It also makes sense to have all valves and visible joints checked at the same time.

If a simple “nip up” of a compression or gland nut does not improve the leak quickly, or if tightening makes it worse, stop straight away. Continuous tightening can easily split fittings or distort pipes, leading to a sudden failure.

Stop immediately and call for help if water starts spraying, if the leak is close to electrical fittings, or if you are unsure whether your system is sealed or open-vented.
